Kelmarsh – Speed Indicator Signs

Background

Kelmarsh is a village and civil parish in West Northamptonshire, England. Residents living on Main Road, Kelmarsh A508, raised concerns that vehicles were speeding at all times of the day. One of the main reasons for concern was that young school children cross this road to catch their school bus and the elderly cross the road this road to enjoy the nature, village and countryside. Kelmarsh Parish Council relied on funding and support from Kelmarsh Windfarm Community benefit, the purpose of which is to support voluntary and community organisations near to the Kelmarsh Wind Farm, to purchase the signs required.

Solution

Kelmarsh Parish Council purchased two Speed Indicator Signs, one for each end of Kelmarsh Village. The Speed Indicator Signs display the actual speed when oncoming traffic is below or at the speed threshold as a green number. When oncoming traffic is above the threshold it is displayed as a red number. This is shown in the image below.

The speed of the road is currently 40mph. The red warning sign will display for anyone travelling above this threshold. Kelmarsh Parish Council hoped this solution would help to slow down the traffic and make their village a safer place to live again.

Outcome

This solution is designed to support speed awareness – warning drivers exceeding safe speed limits and encouraging them to slow down. The signage is managed by a group of 6 residence and this is changed on a rota every 2 weeks. The residents of Main Road, Kelmarsh have commented that the traffic is definitely slowing down.  A spokesperson for Kelmarch PC commented “We would like to give a big thank you to Garry and his team at Coeval Ltd for a smooth start to finish of installation”.
